Project archive: New Media School – Morphogenesis of School Typologies – Part 01

New Media School project was developed for the ACADIA 2007 competition: Expanding bodies. It was the idea competition for designing a school that carries capacity for the media arts, such as New Cinema, Gaming, Animation, Media Theory, as well as Human Performance and New Media in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. Our initial approach to this project was to understand the composition space for the institutions in different era in a history and apply new structure for the school in digital age.

School Typologies

Network Diagram

What made us most interest was the network diagram by Paul Baran. The diagram is representing different types of network system by using exactly same points cloud and showing how to expand capacity of network bigger. By comparing these school typologies and point cloud diagram, the idea of using distributed network system for this New Media School came across to us.

Structural System

To establish the distributed network system as a building system, we applied “Voronoi” diagram in 3D. It creates a unique structural system which could be seen in inside of our bone.  The structural system holds not only the integrity, but also network cables within it so that the entire building system works as one network.
