With the support of Hunter Douglas Japan, Formula will be exhibited at CMTEL (Color / Material / Trend Exploration Laboratory) of Tama Art University in Tokyo until June 2010. It is a little bit far from center of Tokyo, however if you are going to visit Toyo Ito’s beautiful library, please stop by to see our Formula.

TerreFarm Lab Summer Workshop

Daisuke Nagatomo joined TerreFarm Lab Summer Workshop “Design and Grow”, one month workshop organized by Mitchell Joachim and Maria Aiolva of Terre Form 1. The workshop was consisted of 1 week of seminar by people who are developing urban farming, 1 week of filed trip to visit actual example of urban farming, and 2 weeks of design workshop to develop own projects on the rooftop of the Metropolitan Exchange building.

Set in New York City, TerreFarm Lab seeks to rethink what is salubrious about the city, in both its forms and its life, by reflecting on the consequences of a fundamentally new level of sustainability. We will base our investigations on one illuminating hypothesis: in the future New York will grow to be self-sufficient in its critical necessities. In particular, we will observe a series of specific technical, urbanistic, and architectural strategies not simply for the food production required to feed the city, but the possibilities of diet, agriculture, and retrofitted facilities that could achieve that level within the constraints of the local climate. Mod Pod

Mod Pod is the movable farming device that is incorporating seating. It can be configured spiral, linear, or any ways people want to. This device is designed to be used in urban rooftop, refuge camp, or wherever people want to bring with. Six prototypes in different height and drainage system were made during the workshop weeks to see the potential of this device and for the farther development.

MisoSoupDesign in Barcelona

We have been invited as visiting researcher to IaaC (Institute for advanced architecture in Catalonia) for farther development of their Solar Decathlon Europe entry, FabLab House. The Solar Decathlon was initiated in US in 2002 to challenge for the ever-increasing need for energy. IaaC will be participating the first edition of Europe to be opened June 2010 in Madrid. We have been learning new solar panel technologies, parametric software, and how to use HUGE laser cutter with the other researchers from all over the world. Hopefully, FabLab House will be standing in Madrid by the end of May 2010.

Taya renewal design competition entry

We are selected 8 shortlists for Taya renewal design competition (Japanese only) out of 316 entries. The final presentation was held in Magazine-house headquarter in Ginza, Tokyo on October 26th, 2009. Unfortunately, we didn’t win this competition, however some judges saw a potential of developing this wood louver farther. Hopefully, this project will help us to win next competition.

The facade idea is to use wood louvers that is generated from a continuous surface and cut out by CNC machine. There were some questions about the maintenace of using thin wood for exterior facade as well as the detail how each horizontal louvers meet. These are quite big issues for creating such design with CNC machine.
